Former Arsenal captain opens up on why he left Gunners to win League in Germany

Per Mertesacker left Arsenal at the end of 2016, after nine years at the club. He didn't win a Premier League title as a player at Arsenal

Per Mertesacker, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, said he left Arsenal to win the Bundesliga title with Werder Bremen.

The German defender joined the Gunners in 2006 and went on to make over 300 appearances for the club. He was part of the Arsenal team that won the FA Cup in 2014 and 2015, but he never won the Premier League title.

In an interview with the Bundesliga website, Mertesacker said he left Arsenal because he wanted to win the Bundesliga title. He said, "I wanted to win the Bundesliga. I had won the World Cup with Germany, but I had never won a league title. I wanted to experience that feeling of winning a league title."

Mertesacker joined Werder Bremen in 2016 and helped the club win the Bundesliga title in 2017. He retired from playing in 2018 and is now the academy manager at Arsenal.
